Betty Keener McClendon December 30, 1953 – February 27, 2026 It is with profound sorrow and deep love that we announce the passing of Betty Keener McClendon, who departed this life on February 27, 2026, at the age of 72 after a long illness. Born on December 30, 1953, Betty lived a life defined by faith, service, strength, and unwavering love for her family. She was a woman of determination and perseverance whose accomplishments reflected both her intellect and her deep commitment to others. Betty received her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education from Jacksonville State University in 1995. Continuing her pursuit of excellence in education, she earned her Master’s degree 2009 and later completed her Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in 2011 both from the University of Alabama. Her career in education began as a student teacher at Highland Elementary School, followed by a long and devoted career shaping young minds. She later retired from Duck Springs Elementary School, where she taught alongside her best friend, Suzanne Nance. Teaching was more than a profession to Betty—it was her calling. She loved her students deeply and treasured the bonds she created in the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. Her dedication to service extended beyond education. Betty proudly served as a Sergeant in the National Guard, exemplifying leadership, courage, and commitment to her country. She also faithfully served the people of Alabama for many years as a driver license examiner with the Alabama State Troopers’ office, where she was respected for her professionalism and integrity. A devoted member of Walnut Park Community Church, Betty’s faith guided her life. She found strength in her church community and lived out her beliefs through kindness, generosity, and steadfast love. On January 4, 1980, Betty married the love of her life, Mitchell McClendon. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together they built a family that became the center of her world. She is survived by her devoted husband, Mitchell McClendon; her beloved children, Adam (Kerri) McClendon and Ashley (George) Nix; and the love and joy of her life, her cherished grandchildren, Nyna Bethany Nix, Aden McClendon, Jaxon McClendon, and Claire McClendon. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Gaskin, along with many extended family members and dear friends. Betty was preceded in death by her father, Claude Clay Keener; her mother, Edith Roberts; her chosen parents, Charles and Estelle McCormick; her sisters, Joyce Carrol and Edna Mae Keener ; her brothers, C.B. Keener and Gary Keener; and her brother-in-law, Robert Gaskin. Funeral Arrangements: Funeral services will be officiated by Pastor Jeff Roberson.
