Mr. John Wesley Garmon Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at Old Harmony Cemetery, for John Wesley Garmon, 95, of Whorton Bend, who died Sunday, October 17, 2021. Revs. Steve Simmons and Lauil Thompson will officiate. Village Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. John, more commonly known as “Wes”, was born and raised in Whorton Bend, and he never lived anywhere else during his whole life. He was a proud US Army veteran of World War II, and he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a Mason and belonged to the Cedar Bend Lodge #583 in Southside. Wes served in the past as the president of the Southside Athletic Association. He retired after 35 years of employment at Goodyear, and he was also a member of United Steelworkers, Local 12. Wes was a member at Riverbend Baptist Church. Wes was a lifelong hunter. He was the type that hated flying, but loved to travel; he always loved spending time at his cottage in Panama City. He loved to share stories, was quick to smile, and he made everyone feel special. Wes was an avid Alabama football fan. He never missed any of his sons’ sports practices. Mr. Garmon was the most loving husband, daddy, and pawpaw and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oako and Jessie Garmon; 9 siblings; parents-in-law, John and Minnie Johnson; 2 brothers-in-law; and infant daughter, Jonie. Mr. Garmon is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy J. Garmon; sons, John (Traci) Garmon II and Benjamin “Bengy” (Michelle) Garmon; daughter, Janice Hicks and family; grandchildren, Dustin (Cassi) Phillips, Hallie (Skylar) Nelson, Zachary Garmon, Dylan Garmon, Madison Bjustrom, Emily Bjustrom, and Samual Bjustrom; great-grandchildren, Carson Phillips, Cali Rogers, Maci Rogers, Conner Rogers, Ryder Phillips, Mae Rogers, Averi Phillips, John Houston Nelson; special niece, Teresa Braswell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors or the Alzheimer’s Association. Pallbearers will be Dustin Phillips, Dylan Garmon, Samual Bjustrom, Carson Phillips, Skylar Nelson, and Alston Lewis. Honorary pallbearers are Tommy Hughes, Jerry Ashley, Jeff Ashley, Conner Rogers, Ryder Phillips, John Houston Nelson, Jeff Garmon, and Ricky Johnson. Special thanks to Kindred Hospice, especially Ashley, Nathan, Lindy, Nicole, and Holly; special caregiver, Tammy Crowe; Dr. Sathyan Iyer, Dr. Van Reeder; and special friends and neighbors, Gayla Lewis, Joyce Hughes, and Margaret Satterfield.
