Helen Martha Cofield

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at Village Chapel Funeral Home for Helen Martha Cofield, age 83, of Southside, AL, who passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Born in Langenprozelten, Germany during the terrible times of WW2, her early years were filled with hard times, poverty, and many chaotic events. As a young woman she met and married the love of her life, Harbert L. Cofield Jr. while he was stationed in Germany during his time of service with the U.S. Army. They had 3 children while in Germany; after HL’s discharge from the military, they returned to Gadsden where they had 2 more children. She was primarily a homemaker but later worked for Polystone Marble and Family Dollar in Attalla. She was active in an Al-Anon support group where she had many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Franz Hiezig and Elizabeth Kaiser of Germany; husband of 51 years, Harbert L. Cofield Jr. of Gadsden; and her dear sister, Barbara Waller of Modesto, CA. She is survived by her 5 children, Randy (Felicia), Michael (Judy), John (Mary), Steven, and Anita; 8 grandchildren, Joshua (Tammy), Jacob (Brady), Jason, Kayla (Ty), Sylvia, Skylar (Hannah), Jessica (Christian), and Cody. She had 10 great grandchildren, Dayton, Lane, Rakiah, Eli, Jonathan, Madelyn, Bentley, Paisley, Harlow, and Jackson. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Novitsky, Dr. Bunch at the Alabama Cancer Care Center in Gadsden. Anna Brown and Hannah Young of Amedisys Home Health and Hospice Care who treated our mother with great care and respect. Jacob Cofield for being her after hours personal care giver and helping us navigate through all of the medical decisions. Brady Norton for helping us with all of her legal issues. Anita Cofield for sitting and helping take good care of her during her final days. Randy and Jason Cofield for constantly visiting and praying with her. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Judy Cofield for taking great care of our mother for many years especially during her final days. You were like a second daughter to her.
